Scooby-Doo and KISS: Rock and Roll Mystery
Scooby Doo first premiered in the animated show from Hanna-Barbera called ‘Scooby Doo, Where Are You?’ back in 1969. Scooby Doo rolls with a group of teenagers who solve supernatural mysteries.
KISS is a Rock band who became well-known for their larger than life stage shows and face painted personas.
The movie Scooby Doo and KISS Rock and Roll Mystery is actually not the first time the two have crossed over! KISS appeared in the episode of What’s New, Scooby Doo titled ‘A Scooby Doo Halloween’ back in 2003.
*minor spoilers for Scooby Doo and KISS Rock and Roll Mystery follow*
The movie Scooby Doo and KISS Rock and Roll Mystery takes place at a KISS theme park, KISS World, that appears to be haunted by an evil banshee ghost known as the Crimson Witch. The movie kicks off with Voice Cameos from Kevin Smith and Jay Mewes, who are testing the rides when the The Crimson Witch appears.
As you would imagine, the Mystery Gang is soon on the scene. There are some great gags and Jokes about KISS merchandising EVERYTHING. There is also some great character stuff with the band, who never break character in this. Of course Velma is always the skeptic, and she questions everything! There is also a funny moment when Fred exclaims that he is not much of a KISS fan, but he loves a singing group called The Ascot Five who sing a song called ‘Don’t touch my ascot‘. The kicker is KISS actually recorded the song in character as The Ascot Five!
The straight-to-video animated movie is visually dynamic and of course they make use of most of the more popular KISS songs, especially when they venture to KISS home world, KISSteria, yeah you read that right. Scooby and the gang end up chasing the Crimson Witch through a portal to KISSteria in order to stop her from summoning the monster, Destroyer.
This was probably my favorite of the many Scooby Doo animated features, thanks to the great voice talent, cool music and dynamic animation.
