Bucky Barnes the Winter Soldier

He has a metal arm, and it’s awesome, dude.

In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, James Buchanan “Bucky” Barnes is portrayed by Sebastian Stan. Bucky first appears in Captain America: The First Avenger as a Sergeant serving in the military, and friend to Steve Rogers who has been denied the privilege to serve. After Steve Rogers becomes Captain America, Bucky assists him on a mission against Hydra, but ends up falling to his supposed death during a battle on a train.

In the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier, the mysterious assassin is later revealed to have been Bucky Barnes all along. Bucky didn’t die when he fell from the train, he was discovered by Hydra agents and was subjected to a Hydra super soldier program.

At the end of Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Steve pleads with the mind controlled Winter Soldier, hoping that he will remember their past friendship. Bucky Barnes aka The Winter Soldier has a moment of compassion and saves Steve from drowning. In the after credits for that movie, we see Bucky Barnes in street clothes attempting to process the fact that he was once friends with Steve Rogers.

In Avengers: Age of Ultron, The Falcon  appears in a cameo, and discusses the search for Bucky Barnes with Steve Rogers.

At the beginning of Captain America: Civil War, Bucky Barnes is still at large and is later pursued by Captain America and The Black Panther, both for separate reasons. In the interest of staying Spoiler-Free, I will simply add that Bucky Barnes becomes a very important factor in the events that unfold during Captain America: Civil War.

Myself having read the original Winter Soldier comic book run, as well as being somewhat familiar with his other appearances, never really connected with the character until I saw Captain America: Civil War. I have always enjoyed Sebastian Stan’s portrayal of Bucky/Winter Soldier, but I never fully appreciated it until I saw the nuanced and subtle humor in his performance. Much of that I assume is the fact that he has great chemistry with those around him, especially Anthony Mackie as The Falcon.
