James “Rhodey” Rhodes aka War Machine is a friend and ally to Iron Man created by David Michelinie, John Byrne and Bob Layton. He was a Marine who befriended Tony Stark and took over the mantle of Iron Man when Tony Stark hit rock bottom because of alcoholism. After several adventures as Iron Man, Rhodey upgraded to a more heavily armed suit, the “Variable Threat Response Battle Suit, Model XVI, Mark I” aka “War Machine”.
War Machine has appeared in Marvel Comics, as well as animated TV shows and live action Movies. He was portrayed by Terrence Howard in Iron Man (2008) and then subsequently Don Cheadle in Iron Man 2 (2010), Iron Man 3 (2013) as Iron Patriot, Avengers Age of Ultron (2015) in a smaller supporting role and the upcoming Captain America: Civl War (2016)
In the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Rhodey is a Lieutenant Colonel in the Air Force and acts as the military’s liaison to Stark Industries, and dons the War Machine armor in Iron Man 2.
While I didn’t dislike Terrence Howard as James Rhodes in the first Iron Man movie, I definitely prefer Don Cheadle in the role, mostly because of his chemistry with Robert Downey Jr. War Machine is featured prominently as part of Team Iron Man in Cvil War and can be seen “down for the count” in the trailer for the movie. I’m really hoping he doesn’t get killed off because I feel they have only scratched the surface with the characters possibilities and importance to Tony Stark. Also, I’m notching the War Machine Funko Pop doesn’t have a shoulder cannon anymore and he is holding some sort of baton. Has War Machine gone non-lethal? I guess we have to wait to find out when we see the movie!
